AI Prompts for Tutors: The Ones That Actually Save You Time

Most "AI prompts for tutors" lists hand you the obvious stuff: make a worksheet, generate ten practice problems. Useful, but you already knew AI could do that. What actually changes your week are the handful of prompts that pinpoint what a student actually does not understand, so those are the ones I am leading with. Change the details in brackets and they are yours.
One rule before we start, and it matters: never paste a student's name or private records into a public AI tool. Describe the learner generically instead ("a 9th grader who freezes on word problems"). You get the same help without handing a child's data to a company. The five most tutors never think to try
Diagnose the misconception under the wrong answer. This is the whole job, and AI is startlingly good at it.
My student got this problem wrong. The problem was [3/4 + 1/2] and they answered [4/6]. Do not just correct it. Tell me the exact misconception underneath that mistake, and give me one diagnostic question that would confirm whether that is really what is going on.
Explain it three ways at three levels. When one explanation bounces off, you do not want to invent the next one live.
Explain [what a variable is in algebra] three different ways at three different levels: one concrete with objects a student can picture, one as a plain simple rule, and one that explains the why underneath. My student is [a 7th grader who does fine with arithmetic but panics when letters appear]. I want to try them one at a time and see which lands.
Rehearse the discouraged student. The hardest moment in tutoring is not the math, it is "I'm just bad at this."
Role-play a [14-year-old] student of mine who has decided they are "just bad at math" and keeps shutting down instead of trying. Respond the way a discouraged kid really would. After a few exchanges, stop and coach me on how I handled it and what I could have said to get them to try again.
Turn the flat worksheet into a game. Same skills, suddenly they are leaning in instead of checking the clock.
Turn this worksheet into a [game or challenge] a [10-year-old] would actually want to win, using nothing but paper, a pencil, and a timer. Keep the exact same skills, just make it feel like a game instead of homework. Here it is: [paste].
Build the review plan around what they keep forgetting. The stuff that slips out between sessions is exactly what needs resurfacing.
My student keeps forgetting [negative signs when distributing and how to find a common denominator]. Build me a [4-week] spaced-review plan that quietly resurfaces those specific things a little in every session, mixed in with new material, so they stop slipping away. Keep each review chunk to about [5 minutes].
The everyday time-savers
These are the staples. They will not surprise you, but they will give you your prep time back.
Generate practice at exactly the right level.
Give me [8] practice problems on [two-step equations] for a student working at about [a beginning 8th grade level]. Start easy and ramp up gradually. Put the answers and worked solutions separately so I can check quickly during the session.
Explain it in plain language with an analogy.
Explain [how to multiply fractions] in plain language a [confused 11-year-old] would get, with one everyday analogy. No jargon. Keep it short enough that I can say it out loud in the session without reading a paragraph.
Plan the next session.
Plan a [45-minute] tutoring session for [a 9th grader shaky on graphing lines]. Include a quick warm-up that reviews last time, one main thing to teach, guided practice, and a short check at the end. Assume [I have a whiteboard and nothing else].
Write the parent progress update.
Draft a short, warm progress update to a parent about [their child, who is gaining confidence in reading but still rushing through comprehension questions]. Lead with something real and positive, be specific, and end with one thing we are working on next. Leave the student's name blank; I will add it.
Make a fast check-for-understanding quiz.
Write a quick [5] question check on [subtraction with borrowing] for [a 2nd grader] to see if it really stuck. Mix a couple of easy ones with a couple that would expose a misunderstanding. Answer key separately.
Lay out a study schedule between sessions.
Build a simple [two-week] study schedule for a student prepping for [a unit test on fractions], with small [15-minute] tasks they can do on their own between our sessions. Keep it realistic for a busy kid and easy for a parent to help enforce.
How to make any of these yours
These prompts are starting points, not magic words. The single biggest upgrade is telling it who this student really is and what you actually want, the way you would brief a co-tutor taking over your student for a week. The more of this real kid you put in, the better it comes back, which is the whole idea behind talking to AI like a person, not a search box. And if a first answer is close but not right, do not start over, just tell it what to fix, one of the small prompting moves that change everything.
AI can generate infinite practice problems and three fresh explanations before you finish your coffee. What it cannot do is the part that is actually yours: knowing this particular kid, catching the moment their face changes, and finding the one thing that finally unlocks them. It clears the busywork so you have more of yourself left for that. That is the honest promise of AI for a tutor, and it is a good one.
